Living in an urban area can be an invigorating experience. Cities provide countless opportunities for entertainment and social gatherings. Public transportation is readily available and less expensive than traveling on your own. One of the tradeoffs of living in an urban area, however, is usually a smaller apartment. If you just leased an apartment that affords you the perfect location, but you're concerned about the amount of, or lack of, space you have to work with, don't despair! Use these tricks to help make your small space feel larger.

  • Choose Visually Lightweight Furniture. When choosing furniture, consider the visual weight, not the actual size of each piece. Furniture with legs appears lighter than boxy, upholstered pieces. Also, glass tables help make rooms feel more open.
  • Use Neutral Colors. One of the best ways to push back the walls in a room is to use neutral colors throughout the décor. When neutral colors are used, the eye can roam more freely throughout, making the space feel larger.
  • Emphasize the Vertical. Invite the eye to move above and below eye level. A good example is to hang drapes closer to the ceiling instead of right above the top of a window.
  • Play Up the Light. Enlarge space by taking advantage of all available light. White and pale colors increase the brightness of a room by reflecting light.
By following a few guidelines you can make your small space work for you and enjoy the convenience of urban living!
